Baby Gifts from the Government?
There’s an old saying that: “every baby comes with a loaf of bread under his arm.” This never truer than in Finland because every baby comes with its own box! It’s a starter pack of clothes, toys and sheets and the box can even be used as a portable bed.
For over 75 years, Finland’s new mums have been given a box by the government. They have a choice of a cash grant of €140 or the box and its contents. Most choose the box as the contents total more than the cash grant.
The gift box was originally intended for low income families but the package became universally available to everyone since 1949 regardless of their background. It’s been a well received helping hand to all new families and parents for over 50 years ensuring all babies get an equal start in life.
